Traditionally, Marouflage is a 3000 year old technique involving the fastening of a canvas painting to a solid support, such as a wall or a wooden board. There were several types of adhesives used including a rabbit skin glue. Marouflage, which is a glue made from the residue of paint was also used, and in the 1900's, a mixture of linseed oil and ground white lead.
A thin coat of the adhesive was applied to both the wall and the canvas. Once the canvas was mounted to the wall, pressure was exerted with rubber hand rollers to smooth the canvas and remove any bubbles. Although traditional methods of applying canvas still exist, technology has made this process easier and more environmentally friendly.
This is another tool to include in your repertoire and portfolio. This technique will allow you to provide your clients with high end art arrangements within their homes. Each student will be provided with canvas pieces of art which will be mounted on masonite, sheetrock or wood panels. Each student will be taught to do their own applications for distressing, gold leafing, and embellishing their work. We will teach you how to take a piece of art, a client’s favorite picture, or family picture, and make it look hundreds of years old. Aging and some gilding will also be a part of the workshop process. Three to four samples will be completed over 24” X 24” masonite panels, wood panel door fronts, or sheetrock. Other topics of discussion will cover selling your marouflage, ceiling installations and millwork for architectural elements. Water based products and graphic materials, all from Faux Effects International, Inc. will be provided.
